First Bloom of Spring

Not ev’ry tree is covered,

Only the brave show themselves.

Entering stage four of their cycle,

Preceding the peak bloom of tourists.

A cloud of blossoms lasts but days,

To return anew a year later.

Sakura’s blossoming:

A fragility of beauty.

Humankind’s suffering:

A transience of lifespans.

The stages of reincarnation,

Often contradictorily reaped.

Souls mirroring trees,

Spring everlasting.

  1. I’m a bit of a logophile, so I love when your poems make me look up new words—like Sakura. Nice to learn about the cherry blossom’s connection to Buddhism. My favorite lines: “Humankind’s suffering: A transience of lifespans.” Viewing suffering as transient can help us through it.
